Natural experiment
The pandemic bundled social isolation, school closure, digital communication, psychological distress, disrupted healthcare, altered peer interaction, and more mental-health content. That bundle is a gift to history and a nightmare for causal inference.
What we know

Meta-analysis of symptom prevalence (Racine et al., 2021); developmental reviews of deprivation; clinical series. Almost no design cleanly partitions media from lockdown.
What else could explain it
Social-media effects could still operate inside the bundle—as mediators, not rivals, of pandemic stress.
What we don't know yet
How much of clinic-specific phenomena tracks stress versus platform content, and what remains after schools reopened.
In a clean natural experiment, one exposure moves. In 2020, many exposures moved. We can say that youth distress rose in many datasets. We cannot, from that rise, say that TikTok did it. We also cannot say that TikTok did nothing, because digital communication was how a lot of remaining peer life happened (Orben, Tomova & Blakemore, 2020).
Mistake A: attribute 2021 clinic waves to social media while ignoring isolation, fear, grief, and collapsed services.
Mistake B: attribute them to “the pandemic” as if young people were not also inside the most intense mental-health content environment yet built.
The scientifically adult move is to keep both in the model and go looking for designs that can pull them apart: staggered school reopenings, platform outages, pre-registered content shocks, within-person exposure traces. Those designs are still rare.
