Identity
Adolescence is a sensitive period for sociocultural processing. Diagnostic names can enter that work of becoming. That fact is developmental, not an accusation.

Adolescents are unusually sensitive to peer evaluation and identity cues. Illness identity is a documented construct in recovery research. Social identity can protect health or, in some groups, maintain symptoms.
How we know it
Developmental neuroscience and psychology; illness-identity and social-cure research. Little of it was designed around TikTok diagnostic communities.
What else could explain it
People adopt labels because they fit; identity talk is downstream of symptoms, not a cause of them.
What we don't know yet
When online diagnostic identity organizes self-compassion versus foreclosure, and how belonging interacts with loneliness.
Investigatory path. Mental-health label → self-concept → community → belonging → identity reinforcement.
Supportive path. Diagnosis (or a careful self-understanding) → understanding → self-compassion → community → support.
These are not moral types of person. They are different organizations of the same ingredients: a name, a story, a group. Social identity theory predicts that group meaning and norms decide which way belonging cuts (Cruwys et al., 2014).
It refuses to treat an illness-related identity as inherently pathological. It refuses to treat destigmatization as the whole story. It refuses the slang of “performative” except where that term appears in a source, in which case it is examined rather than echoed.
